To our friends and family: we have news! We quit our jobs, gave away most everything we owned, and left Greeley, Colorado, to spend a year in Patagonia, in Luis´s hometown of Neuquen. This blog is my effort to record our year, and tell you about our lives and what it´s like to live in Argentina.
Please post your comments. I´d love to hear from you!
My name is Joy Wintersteen and I´m a North American raised in Bethel Alaska. Luis Echenique is my Argentine husband of 7 years. We met in Buenos Aires where I was was teaching English in 1997. Lucas is our 3 year old son, and Maite is our one year old daughter. They were both born in Greeley Colorado, which is where we lived for the last 4 years.
Luis and I are restless folks. If we could spend most of our lives with traveling packs on, we probably would. Now that we have children, we figure the days of traipsing across Africa are over. At least until the kids are a little older. Our new mode of adventure will be from our home in Neuquen, Argentina, where we plan to spend a year reacquainting ourselves with life outside the comforts of the United States. The idea is to spend time with Luis's father, Ruben, and other family, and our friends here. Lucas and Maite will get to know the Argentine life, develop convincing Neuquen accents, and get a second passport. We wanted to show that it is possible for a family to give up their comfortable life in search of the rewards that living abroad brings.
